The One Day Kilkenny Itinerary
Kilkenny is one of Ireland’s true gems; an amazing city steeped in history and tradition, full of exciting things to see and do. Home to castles and the famous ‘Medieval Mile’, as well as one of the oldest pubs in the country, history buffs will be in their element, while foodies will enjoy taking in some of the area’s renowned cafés and restaurants.
With so much to see and do, it can be tricky to take in everything that Kilkenny has to offer, especially if you’re only here for a short visit. That’s why we’ve put together our one day itinerary – consider it your ‘best of’ guide to Kilkenny!
Have Breakfast at Café la Coco
A regular fixture on “Best Coffee in Ireland” lists (such as Lovin’ Dublin), this cute little café also serves a super breakfast, whether you’re looking for pancakes, avocado on sour bread, a breakfast bap or their legendary scones.

Seeing as it is only around the corner from Kilkenny Castle, it is ideally located in a scenic area of the town.
Visit Kilkenny Castle
The entire city of Kilkenny falls under the shadow of this magnificent castle, which has changed hands many times in its 800-year history. The guided tours are fascinating and reasonably priced.

For the more frugal explorer, access to the gorgeous grounds and gardens is free – a lovely way to spend an hour or to.
Explore the Medieval Mile Museum
If you want to have a more in-depth look at the city of Kilkenny’s long and interesting history, The Medieval Mile Museum melds the ancient with the present: it’s a converted church with modern twists on exhibits, including interactive touchscreens which make the experience an engaging and interactive one that allows you to take in the exhibition at your own pace.

Alternatively, you can go on a guided tour of the museum and hear all about Kilkenny’s history from an enthusiastic expert in your choice of 5 languages. The museum is suitable for people of all ages – there’s even a LEGO mini figure hunt that kids (and big kids) will love!
Have Lunch at Foodworks
Simple, hearty and critically acclaimed, Foodworks serves organic, tasty grub. Its lunch menu includes a range of sandwiches (including pork from their own farm), salad and pizzas. And, like many a good restaurant, they’ve got Smithwick’s on draft!

Experience the Rich History of Smithwick’s
Smithwick’s is one of Kilkenny’s most famous exports. Now, it also provides one of the city’s best tourist attractions. At the Smithwick’s Experience, you will see what goes into Ireland’s most popular ale, taste the wonder that is Smithwick’s and our new ales, and find out what went on in the rich, 300 years of Smithwick’s history.
Have Dinner at the Hungry Moose
Voted the Best Burger in Ireland, the Hungry Moose is one of Kilkenny’s most renowned eateries. With its range of interesting combos, quality ingredients and fries to die for, this burger joint stands out from the others not just thanks to its tempting menu, but also because it is an independent and partially crowdsourced venture.

We recommend The Hungry Moose’s signature burger which includes smoked bacon, dill pickles, a beer battered onion ring, aged Canadian moose cheddar and organic maple BBQ sauce – it’s yummy!
Have a Pint at Kyteler’s
One of the oldest inns in the country, Kyteler’s has a long and somewhat spooky history. Whiskey isn’t the only spirit that you might find here – legend has it that the pub is haunted by Dame Alice Kyteler, who founded the pub in 1324 and was believed by some to be a witch!

Kytler’s maintains a traditional look on the inside and out, and the food and live music are both as ‘old-school Irish’ as you could ask for.
