Summer Events and Cool Brews: What’s Happening at Smithwick’s This July?
The 2025 Barrel Yard Sessions have already been drawing crowds of music fans and ale enthusiasts since the start of summer. Launched in 2023, our seasonal sessions in the Barrel Yard have become one of the top live music events running in the city.
Our purpose-built outdoor space is a vibrant suntrap with plenty of space to sit and stand, as well as umbrellas and shelter if it’s needed. It's got heating too, for when the evening chill draws in. Best of all, the Barrel Yard sessions are unticketed and totally free. Just arrive in time to find a seat, grab a pint of ale, and enjoy!
July so far
It’s been a fantastic month for live music so far, with loads of local legends gracing the stage here at the Barrel Yard to play in the sun. Our Friday evening Six After 6 sessions have welcomed B&B to play their fusion of Irish trad with contemporary tunes, and Up She Flew bringing their foot-tapping trad musicianship.
Our July weekend sessions kicked off on Saturday, July 5th, with Raindogs, who played some great renditions of classics by artists ranging from Bob Dylan to the Rolling Stones. Sean Maher brought his rousing set to the stage on Sunday, the 6th. The following Saturday brought blues and roots to the Barrel Yard when Bench Warrant brought their rock ‘n roll vibes to the stage, and B&B returned to us on Sunday for more turned-up trad.
And what’s up next…
Burnchurch
Friday, July 18 at 6 pm
Kick off your weekend with Burnchurch, a four-piece Kilkenny favourite known for their high-energy shows, bluesy, poppy rhythms, beautiful melodies, and Irish trad influences. They’re a regular favourite here on Parliament Street, so expect a lively crowd and some gorgeous keyboard action.
Colcannon
Friday, July 25 at 6 pm
Colcannon are a Kilkenny act made up of husband-and-wife duo Conor King and Alexandra Vardalas. They always bring a lively blend of Irish trad and modern flair to the stage. They recently released their album “The Blacksmith,” which features a cover of the Planxty track of the same name, and seven other superb covers of trad classics. Their performance is a perfect match for the Yard’s cosy vibe, and their cover versions, some of which date back to medieval times, are a fantastic soundtrack to the city of Kilkenny.
Delta Dogs
Saturday, July 19 at 5 pm
The Delta Dogs, an electric blues power trio from Waterford, are due to set the Barrel Yard alight with their soulful sound on Saturday, 19th July. Known for their electric energy and tight riffs, this band will bring blues classics to the Barrel Yard. Expect to hear hits from international blues and rock heroes, as well as our very own Irish blues legend, Rory Gallagher. The Dogs have played at our sessions before, and were a big hit, so arrive early and get ready to rock.
