A Guide to Christmas Markets in Kilkenny 2023
The Christmas season has officially started. Whether you’re feeling in the festive mood or still need a helping hand,
Kilkenny has something for everyone. This year, there’s a range of markets and activities running from early December well
into the New Year. So, no matter if you’re looking for the perfect gift, want to try your hand at wreath-making, or simply
want to show off your best Christmas jumper, here’s your guide to the Christmas Markets taking place in Kilkenny in 2023.
1. Yulefest Christmas Market
Yulefest began this year on November 25th, transforming the medieval city of Kilkenny into a Christmas wonderland.
Running all the way until Christmas eve, an extensive calendar of events will take place to ring in the festive season.
Every weekend, visitors can look forward to the Yulefest Christmas Market taking place against the picturesque backdrop of Kilkenny Castle.
Wander through wooden huts serving festive fare and showcasing beautiful local crafts as you admire the twinkling lights and seasonal decorations.
What’s more, the Festival Bandstand will provide live music and entertainment every weekend
featuring a varied programme of local talent. On December 9th, by popular demand the Santa
Truck will roll into town where children can come aboard and visit Santa’s grotto with all
donations going to aid the LauraLynn Hospice. Other events include the Medieval mile run,
movie nights, an impressive firework display over the River Nore, and much more.
2. The Smithwick’s Experience at Christmas
This festive season the 300-year-old brewing site will be hosting a very special, one night only event.
On the evening of December 16th, the halls will be lit up by Christmas lights and festive carols as guests are welcomed into
the cosy Barrell Yard by local Christmas Carollers. A selection of speciality winter warmers, curated by our expert bar team
will be on offer as well as a great selection of ales. Moreover, guests will be able to indulge in some delicious Christmas
treats from the MUSE food truck. Best of all, there will be a competition for the best Christmas jumper! So, why not make
us part of your experience in Kilkenny this Christmas. Entry is free! So early arrival is strongly encouraged.
3. Mountain View Markets
The Mountain View Christmas Market takes place every Sunday in December until the 18th, offering gorgeous views of the countryside
as you peruse stalls of local crafts and delicious food. This is the perfect place to pick up a local, handmade gift for a loved one
– or do a bit of shopping for yourself. On the 10th and 17th of December, the market will host a very special guest from the North Pole.
After the market closes for the year, there will be a New Year’s Eve Market featuring live music and celebrations to ring in 2024.
4. The Christmas Miscellany Rothe House
For those looking for a night of song, storytelling, music, and more look no further than Rothe House on December 12th.
The former merchant’s house will deck the halls to welcome you to a night of traditional Christmas celebrations.
Think mulled wine, minced pies and good company. Spending a festive night in this stately house will be enough to put anyone
in the Christmas mood. If you’re looking to indulge in some crafts this season, be sure to stop by their wreath-making workshop on December 2nd too.
