A feast for the senses at Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny
Ireland's newest visitor attraction expected to welcome thousands of visitors.
The much-anticipated Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny has already captured the imagination of the people of Kilkenny and its international visitors. Since opening its doors to the public on 31st July 2014, Ireland's newest visitor attraction has welcomed an impressive mix of domestic and international tourists and is proving particularly popular with visitors from France, Germany, the United States, the UK, Canada and Australia.
Visitors from the length and breadth of Ireland are also keen to learn more about the history of Ireland's oldest beer, with thousands of Irish residents ensuring Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny was on their holiday itinerary over the last four weeks and is on track for success.
Celebrating its official opening today, we take a step back in time to the year 1231 and witness the medieval origins of brewing on the site of the Abbey of St. Francis where three Franciscan monks (played by actors) bring to life the history of Smithwick's in Kilkenny. An imposing life-size holographic monk narrates this part of the Smithwick's story before visitors are brought forward in time to the arrival of John Smithwick in the 1700's and the right up to the present day.
Located in the old Victorian brewing building on Parliament Street in Kilkenny City, this €3.5m multi-sensory and interactive experience immerses visitors in the history of Smithwick's, Ireland's oldest beer brand, the amazing heritage of the Smithwick's family and its place in Kilkenny, a city steeped in history and brewing tradition.
During the multi-lingual tour, the Smithwick's brewing process is brought to life, with visitors having the opportunity to experience the smells, tastes and textures of the raw materials involved in creating the perfect pint of ale. Living portraits of key Smithwick's family members talk amongst each other and tell the truly amazing story of how Smithwick's went from being a small local brewery to a brew that is famous the world over.
Paul Carty, Managing Director at Guinness Storehouse said, "Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny is a major investment by Diageo Ireland and has been modelled on the Guinness Storehouse. We believe that we can mirror our previous success and Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny will be a major boost for the tourism potential of Kilkenny and the surrounding region, which is already a wonderful, culturally rich tourist destination."

Notes to Editors
Smithwick's has been brewed since 1710, and in that time the brewers have learned a thing or two about beer. A seven time winner of La Monde gold medal, 300 years on, Smithwick's is still a favourite with ale drinkers today. In 2011, Smithwick's launched Smithwick's Pale Ale and in 2013, Smithwick's Winter Spirit was launched. Smithwick's Long Summer is the latest seasonal addition to the range.
